36 years have passed since the January 20 tragedy

Black January, or the January 20 Tragedy, refers to the night of January 19–20, 1990, when the Soviet army, together with Armenian armed groups, carried out a terror act against the people of Azerbaijan.

This tragic event entered the history of Azerbaijan’s struggle for freedom and territorial integrity as a page of heroism. On January 20, 1990, angered by the aggressive actions of Armenia, which had territorial claims against our country, and by the support these actions received from the former USSR leadership, large crowds of Azerbaijani citizens took to the streets and squares of Baku to voice their firm protest. In response, Soviet military units were deployed against the civilian population, resulting in an unprecedented national tragedy.

During those fateful days, brave sons of the homeland, who valued the freedom, honor, and dignity of their country above all else, sacrificed their lives and rose to the heights of martyrdom. As a result of this tragedy, 147 innocent civilians were killed, 744 were injured, and more than 800 people were unlawfully arrested.

We pray to Allah for the mercy of our martyrs.

WE HAVE NOT FORGOTTEN, AND WE WILL NOT LET IT BE FORGOTTEN!
