CSKA & Sporting To Meet In Uefa Cup Final
CSKA became Russia’s first European finalists since 1972 when they beat Parma in Moscow thanks to a dazzling performance by Daniel Carvalho. The Brazilian schemer was on target twice himself before setting up a third in a 3-0 win. CSKA will meet Sporting Lisbon in the final – at Sporting’s own Jose Alvalade stadium – after Sporting and AZ Alkmaar drew 4-4 on aggregate, the Portuguese club qualifying on the away goals rule.
In Moscow, Carvalho opened the scoring for CSKA after ten minutes, then netted again nine minutes after half-time. Vassili Berezoutski headed home Carvalho’s free-kick on 61 minutes to make it 3-0. Parma’s Daniel Bonera was sent off for a second bookable offence in added time, while a flare thrown by celebrating fans after the first goal exploded near Parma keeper Luca Bucci, who had to be replaced nine minutes later by Sebastien Frey.
CSKA coach Valery Gazaiyev said afterwards: "Considering the result of the previous match (0-0 in Parma), we worked out a tactical plan aimed at an exceptional attack and unconditional victory."
Meanwhile in Holland, Miguel Garcia’s scored a dramatic last gasp goal for Sporting Lisbon to secure victory over AZ Alkmaar. Trailing 2-1 from the first leg, AZ got off to the perfect start when Kenneth Perez headed precisely past Ricardo. But Liedson equalised from close range, before Stein Huysegems side-footed home for AZ to send the game into extra time.
Then Jaliens volleyed a third for AZ, only for Garcia to head a second for Sporting. That made it 3-2 to AZ on the night, 4-4 on aggregate, and Sporting progressed on the basis of their two away goals.
