Turkish superleaque: Malatyaspor 0-3 Fenerbahçe

Mehmet Yozgatlý scored twice in his first start of the season as we beat Malatyaspor 3-0 away, with Tuncay Þanlý netting our third goal in his return from injury to level the points and goal difference with Galatasaray at the top of the Süper Lig. A number of changes were made to the side by Christoph Daum with Tuncay returning to the starting line-up on the left wing, Marcio Nobre making way up front for Nicolas Anelka to move to the lone forward position, Mehmet playing on the right wing with Selçuk Þahin sacrificed in the centre of the midfield. Stephen Appiah and Marco Aurelio took on the holding roles of the team behind Alex de Souza, who kept his creative position. Mehmet’s enthusiasm was clear to see as early as the fifth minute, when he picked up a pass from Appiah to launch at goal, only to see his effort go slightly wide. Many attacks involved Mehmet, who displayed examples of his effective crossing and calmness to pick out players. Tuncay picked out Mehmet for the first goal though, switching the ball to his right foot on the left wing to spot Mehmet on the edge of the box who did excellently to hit a first time shot that went straight into the bottom right hand corner of Fevzi Tuncay’s goal in the 35th minute. Anelka’s drive and pace was on show in Malatya as well - his dribble to the by-line was concluded with a cut-back to Alex, but the Brazilian’s effort wasn’t good enough. Five minutes from time, Mehmet got his second through another cross from the left wing, this time from captain Ümit Özat. Mehmet was left with a simple finish from close range at the back post, 2-0. Malatya were ineffective in attack, unable to carry the ball into our final third for most of the first half. Bilal, a Fenerbahçe youth product, was looking menacing with his powerful left foot, but his shots were frequently blocked by Önder Turacý and Fabio Luciano. Alex was less involved than usual, but just a touch from him made sure Tuncay got on the scoresheet for the third and final goal of the game. The Turkish international played the ball into Alex, who returned the pass first time into the path of Tuncay before he took a touch and hit it in from Fevzi’s near side. Nobre’s entrance improved our presence up front as Malatya pushed for a consollation goal, increasing space for Anelka, who was given a pass in a two-against-two situation by Nobre in the 75th minute, putting him clear on goal. However, the French forward hit the ball straight at Fevzi and the scoreboard remained unchanged. Referees: Yılnur Önen, Alparslan Acımert, Hüseyin Fidan.
